Re: First post: Questions regarding ALTEC 612 enclosure - DI
OK.
here we go: test4.
larger file, larger font, larger image...
ALTEC BEST: I?m using rhino - a 3d modeling program. but I am converting the drawings to adobe illustrator files - text is done in illustrator.
I have one more question : maybe you have the answer ALTEC BEST ...
What is the angle on the bevel on the speaker opening?

Re: First post: Questions regarding ALTEC 612 enclosure - DI
I'm pretty sure it is 45?.The bevel doesn't go all the way back to the inside of the cabinet on a 3/4" baffle.Leave about an 1/8"-3/16".I have 416's mounted in them at the moment.I will measure and measure the braces for you if you can wait till tonight ?
Thanks ! Your drawings look good, nice job ! I blew up the individual cabinet plans.

Hi ! thanks :)
- I have loads of time regarding this project... just had quite a bit of time these last days so used them much on these drawings...
I measured the degree on the element in the brochure on the 604 E... got 60 degrees...
Do you think you could measure the speaker opening from the back edge to where the bevel edge starts ?
- then we?ll be sure .. and I can find out the degree in the 3D program.
PS: my speakers was sent a couple of days ago from GPA... :)
Re: First post: Questions regarding ALTEC 612 enclosure - DI
Hi again - hope you don?t get bored of me posting all these drawings...
but - if my drawings of the 604 E element is correct I now am quite sure that the speaker element will fit the box with also the brace across the enclosure.
see yourself !
the speaker opening is not in its original position of the 612 C cab in this DIY enclosure.

Re: First post: Questions regarding ALTEC 612 enclosure - DI
Are you sure that the brace you are trying to run diagonaly from front top right to back bottom left as viewed from the front isn't just a diagonal brace along the back wall? :)
And shouldn't the braces be cut short so they don't couple with the adjacent panels?
Re: First post: Questions regarding ALTEC 612 enclosure - DI
Those cabs are gonna strangle the ability's of your 604's. Just my .02

Your gonna want your horn as high up as you can get it.
Re: First post: Questions regarding ALTEC 612 enclosure - DI
OK- I get what you?re saying...
This is the highest placing of the speaker element I get in this box.
- and the brace that I was so happy about in my last post won't fit in when placing the speaker element further up.
, but I guess this is a step in the right direction...

Re: First post: Questions regarding ALTEC 612 enclosure - DI
hmm... just some thoughts:
1. I am very fascinated by the smaller utility cabs for the altec duplex?s ... therefore I want to build a cab that is almost the same as a 612 cab.
2. I also dig the front on the 612 cab?s that have an edge around the front like the sketch of the ICONIC cab.
3. If I do remember correctly the speaker element is placed 1-1/2 inches up from the bottom edge on the front baffle in the ICONIC cab sketch... this means that what you are saying cradeldorf is that this is not a perfect fit... regardless if it is a DIY enclosure or an original ?
- because of the very low placement of the speaker element.
4. I also want to use a grey-ish or silver colour on these cabs...
5. I cannot get the speaker element as far up as in the 612 C cab because I want to keep the front with the round edge ....
6. Because I want to keep the front with the round edge I cannot have the brace that goes across the enclosure....
7. I live in a small flat ... therefore I do not care if I have to sit on the floor or a chair to really listen to these speakers...
Will the placement of the element on my last sketch work ? - or will it still strangle the ability - as you say - cradeldorf ?
8. If these parameters of mine don?t work together (need response here from people that know more about these speakers than me) then I have to go in the thinking box and reconsider the whole 612 project...

Higher frequency's are more directional than Lower Frequency's so the more closer the horn is to ear height the better off they'll sound. As far as my comment about them being strangled Is because I have found through many different cabinet attempts that they sound best in ginormous to colossal sized cabs. I've found my happiness by going open baffle and adding a sub woofer. Took forever to find the sound I wanted but I'm glad I kept trying because it has paid off in the end. If you have good working ears you'll hear the cabinet in your sound, and I didn't like that speaker in a box sound.
Your last sketch is better because it got the horn a little higher, Maybe you can put them on stands...Or just tilt them back slightly so they point more at you.
Using speakers that are made to fill a small venue to fill a small flat Is Overkill at the utmost....That's my kind of thinking. :D
Any information I share with you was learned from the other generous members of this board, I was a noob just like you a couple of years ago.
I think the Iconic had a woofer in the cab and an 805 sitting on top, far cry from an "E" that has the horn in the center of the woofer.
